Business Development Executive (VWV approach)

Job Introduction

As the Business Development & VWV approach Executive you will work closely with the VWV approach Business Development Manager and VWV approach Administrator, to identify prospects, on board new members, manage the referral process, host events and develop and grow relationships with member firms. You will also initially be responsible for managing new enquiries through  the VWV website and reception team as a way of getting to know the business.

You will have business development experience preferably gained in a professional services environment. You will have the confidence to meet with decision makers in law firms, to explain the objectives of the network and to successfully bring on board new members. Previous experience of working in a legal environment is not essential but would be beneficial.

Role Responsibility

Your main responsibilities would be as follows:  

Knowing our Business

  • Develop personal profile and recognition throughout the Firm
  • Learn about the various sectors, services and teams within the Firm
  • Demonstrate awareness through action of the Firm's core values

Business Development/Marketing

  • Assist the VWV approach team with strategic planning and budgeting
  • Assist in drafting and updating marketing materials relating to the network offering
  • Introduce new member firms to the Firm
  • Assist the VWV approach team to raise the profile of the network in Watford and Birmingham by identifying and attending suitable events, to include conferences, seminars and networking events
  • To identify and introduce potential sponsors for VWV approach events
  • Achieve agreed business development targets
  • Work closely with the VWV approach team to plan, attend and follow up on internal and external events and seminars
  • Visit all member firms in Watford and Birmingham on an annual basis
  • Promote the activities of the network on social media platforms

VWV approach Prospects

  • Identify suitable prospect firms in the Watford and Birmingham areas; to include data entry into Infor; to contact those prospects with information about VWV approach
  • Arrange, attend and follow up on meetings with prospect firms

VWV approach New Members

  • Complete new member procedures, to include updating Infor, sending out welcome letters/documents and ensuring return of completed documents from new members


  • Help to maintain various spreadsheets including referrals/enquiries; self-billing agreements and worktypes
  • Allocate incoming referral/enquiries to the appropriate VWV lawyer; add details to Infor and referrals spreadsheet; follow up on outstanding referrals

Learning and development

  • Comply with CPD requirements and identify specific training needs
  • Attend appropriate departmental training sessions
  • Attend appropriate internal courses to get to know more about the Firm's services, sectors and teams

Knowledge sharing

  • Participate in the Firm's knowledge networks and systems to share ideas, know-how, expertise, documents and precedents

Financial management

  • Support the VWV approach Business Department Manager in financial planning and monthly financial reporting where required

Quality standards

  • Demonstrate compliance with the Firm's quality standards and procedures

The Ideal Candidate

You will have:

  • Demonstrable planning, coordinating, management and communication (verbal, written and presentation) skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • A confident telephone manner
  • The ability to work well under pressure and manage/prioritise workload
  • Highly developed organisational and time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • A Flexible and resilient with the ability to work with limited supervision
  • Willing to travel to different locations. Ability to drive, driving licence and access to own vehicle are essential
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong relationships
  • Strong IT skills, especially Word, PowerPoint and Excel, plus experience of using a CRM database
  • An Understanding of the legal sector (desirable)
  • An understanding of the SRA Code of Conduct (desirable)
  • Marketing or Business Development experience in a professional services firm
