Corporate Associate or Senior Associate (not being advertised)

Job Introduction

We are looking for an Associate or Senior Associate to join our experienced Corporate team in Bristol.

The team advise clients on a broad range of transactions and provides specialist corporate legal services to businesses throughout the UK and internationally, via our offices in London, Watford, Bristol and Birmingham.

Working with a range of clients from entrepreneurs, to family owned businesses to charities, to banks,this role is varied and interesting. Our corporate lawyers have specialist industry knowledge across a variety of sectors which enables them to provide quality advice to their clients.

Role Responsibility

Your main responsibilities would be as follows:

Legal/ Technical

  • Demonstrate a consistently high level of competence/expertise in  own area of law·     
  • Use Project Management skills to advise clients and organise work 
  • Operate free from supervision and take responsibility for supervising effectively 
  • Demonstrate accuracy in advice and apply the law in a commercial context for the client
  • Maintain effective working relationships with clients
  • Share client knowledge and support opportunities to facilitate introductions
  • Understand the client's business and adjust approach accordingly

Business generation

  • Contribute to appropriate business development activities of the team and the Firm
  • Promote the services of teams from across the Firm to the client for whom you are acting
  • Introduce new clients to the Firm
  • Achieve agreed business development targets
  • Identify and attend appropriate networking opportunities
  • Actively maintain and manage client records
  • Share client knowledge and support opportunities to facilitate introductions
  • Promote the Firm's sector and team based services, cross referring clients within the Firm
  • Contribute to department / sector BD & Marketing plans
  • Take a lead role in client pitches

Collaboration/people processes

  • Plan, allocate and direct work
  • Promote effective people management within the team
  • Manage a small team and conduct annual PDRs, where appropriate
  • Provide support to new fee earners in the department to ensure a smooth induction
  • Play an active role within the team and support other team members during busy times

Financial management (under the supervision of a Partner)

  • Achieve financial and hours targets as set by the HoD
  • Take responsibility of billing your client directly, promptly and regularly  without supervision, where appropriate
  • Scope of all jobs, using the scoping spreadsheet where necessary and supervising the scoping exercise with junior members of the team
  • Work alongside the team or department's pricing champion to develop a departmental approach to pricing
  • Demonstrate evidence of effectively delegating work to juniors in the team and ensuring that the work is carried out profitably
  • Provide full and prompt assistance to credit control staff to ensure payment of outstanding bills
  • Demonstrate an understanding of cash flow and profitability of both the department and the firm
  • Maintain WIP at an appropriate level
  • Be fully conversant with the SRA  Accounts Rules

Knowledge sharing

  • Actively encourage and endorse knowledge sharing at team, department and Firm level
  • Identify areas where knowledge sharing principles and practices can be applied to bring about smarter working (improving efficiency and profitability)
  • Cascade knowledge sharing practices across work streams and matters, especially on matter analysis, scoping and pricing
  • Develop knowledge sharing initiatives for new or highly technical work types e.g. work flows, matter management techniques, know-how, precedents
  • Lead on matter specific knowledge sharing within the team via: team meetings, problem solving, training sessions, matter de-briefs, lessons learned/after action reviews

Quality standards

  • Demonstrate consistent compliance with the Firm's quality policies and procedures 

Learning and development

  • Comply with CPD requirements and identify specific training needs
  • Attend appropriate departmental training sessions
  • Attend appropriate internal courses (e.g. management and IT skills)
  • Provide informal and formal training as appropriate (e.g. induction, mentoring and internal team presentations)

The Ideal Candidate

You will be an experienced Solicitor/Associate with a high level of expertise in Corporate law. You will demonstrate an ability to work to the SRA's Skills Standards and provide accurate, focused advice to clients.

Required skills

You will have the ability to;

  • advocate and present orally when required
  • conduct effective case and transaction management
  • develop strong client relationships
  • communicate concisely both verbally and in writing with colleagues and clients
  • draft legal documents, advice notes and give legal advice that is clear and concise
  • interview and advise clients, helping them decide the best course of action
  • identify the relevant legal issues applicable to a case or a transaction
  • conduct negotiations where appropriate
