Vacation Scheme 2020 and Training Contract 2022 Watford

Job Introduction

Please select this vacancy if you would like to apply for a place on our Vacation Scheme with a view to securing a Training Contract to start in 2022 to be based out of our Watford office.  We would recommend choosing this route if you're not already working for VWV and you haven't previously completed a placement with us.

Our Vacation Scheme provides you with an excellent opportunity to get to know our firm.  You'll spend time in a number of legal departments, completing tasks and developing your skills.  You'll also complete activities with some of our Business Support teams, ensuring that you get a really good grounding of how a commercial law firm operates.

What does the recruitment process look like?

The deadline for submitting your online application is 20 January 2020, if you’re successful through the online application you'll be invited to attend one of our Assessment Days on either 10 March or 24 March 2020 which will be held in our Bristol office.  Those candidates successfully through the Assessment Day will attend a Vacation Scheme placement over three days in June from the Watford office.  During that time you'll also have interview for a Training Contract which will provide a fantastic opportunity for you to tell us what you've learnt about our firm and demonstrate why you've got the right attributes to become a commercial lawyer.

So what's involved in the Training Contract itself?

Your training contract will last two years and during that time you'll get to experience four different areas of law, each lasting six months.  As real estate is such a large part of our legal offering it's likely that one of your seats will be with one of our Real Estate teams.

In each seat you'll be supervised by a qualified lawyer and support will also be on hand from our Recruitment Manager who will attend your mid and end seat reviews and communicate regularly with you about seat rotations and preferences for your qualification at the end of your Training Contract.

You'll also have the support of the wider Trainee group, in particular your own year cohort, as you support and knowledge share your experiences informally and more formally at quarterly Trainee knowledge sharing meetings and there's plenty of occasions to socialise with the other Trainees and also the wider firm with many social events on offer.

For a real flavour of what it's like to be a Trainee at VWV, why not take a look at some of the blogs our Trainees have written.

Why choose us?

You'll receive a starting salary of £28,000, £2,000 grant towards your living costs while you study and if you haven’t yet started the LPC, we'll sponsor you for that also.  And whilst the latter may be frustrating if you've already started or completed the LPC, then there's good news as there is a genuine opportunity to start your Training Contract earlier than 2022 as we offer Training Contracts to a good proportion of our internal Paralegals each year, freeing up external spaces year on year.

And if that's not enough we'll also contribute to your pension pot, offer holiday allowance that increases on a year's employment, give you private healthcare and life assurance, offer a range of discounts with local businesses and with so many excellent internal training programmes on offer to everyone it's so easy to develop and improve your skills even outside of your Training Contract.

VWV is known for its friendly and welcoming culture so team work and collaboration is key.  With around 500 employees we’re big enough to win the big ticket work but small enough to know our people as individuals and help our star performers shine, see the video for what our people have to say about us.

Not just the best place to work if you're a Harry Potter fan, Watford provides cost efficient living, within a quick easy commute to many central cities such as London and Birmingham and with investment being made into the redevelopment of the town centre and market area, Watford is a thriving environment to both live and work in.

We’re passionate about creating an inclusive workplace that promotes and values diversity, we're striving to create an environment where everyone, regardless of background, can reach their full potential.

So who are we hoping will apply?

Training to be a solicitor is academically challenging so your academic results will need to reflect that challenge and whilst not essential any paralegal experience you have will provide an opportunity to draw on your previous experiences from within a legal environment and demonstrate your enhanced commercial awareness.

And we love to see applications where passion for commercial law and our firm shine through and meet with potential candidates who embody our core values around team work, commerciality and putting the client at the centre of everything we do.   If that's you and you have a flexible and resilient approach, then you're really ticking all the boxes!
